Hello everyone!

Many of you who visit my site come for my open source project Domain Name Portfolio. For the past 6 months or so, you all have been waiting on me to release Version 0.5.0.

I have some big news regarding the future of Domain Name Portfolio. It’s home will change, it will soon be DomainPortfolio.us. The site will be completed, and launched, once Version 0.5.0 of the script is ready.

What changes have been made to Domain Name Portfolio so far?

  • Improved the is_valid_email function.
  • Improved the sanitize function.
  • sanitize() function calls cleaned up. There was no need to specify ‘true’ as a 2nd parameter (for stripping \r\n). As it defaults to true.
  • Changed ver_check function to only grab the latest version, not do an actual check against the current & latest versions. Both latest version and currently installed version are shown in admin.
  • clean() on $_POST vars etc removed. The value is now passed to clean() via the sanitize() function.
  • The iif function introduced in 0.4.2 deprecated. No longer used.
  • Removed the ‘img’ folder.
  • Renamed several folders and files:
    ‘inc’ => ‘includes’,
    ‘tpl’ => ‘templates’,
    ‘funcs.php’ => ‘functions.php’,
    ‘funcs_admin.php’ => ‘functions_admin.php’,
    and several others
  • Changed url params for pagination/sort:
    ‘p’ => ‘page’,
    ’s’ => ’sort’
  • ‘atomic’ font replaced with ‘rubbfont’ for captcha.
  • Added ordering of domains in admin..like it is on main index.
  • Added a new database field - ‘issite’. Setting this to yes when adding or editing a domain, will cause it to be linked on the index & search pages.
  • Added a new database field - ‘description’ for both domains and categories. Which will allow you to give a domain or category a description.
  • You can now add domains in bulk!
  • You now have categories!
  • You now have search!
  • Both the ‘blue’ and ‘default’ templates are gone.
  • The editing/deleting of domains/categories share the same files using ‘modes’ (edit.php & delete.php).
  • Optimized code.
  • Added a referer check on POSTs
  • If your server does not support GD, or has freetype, you’ll see this image on the contact form:
  • Revamped Installer
  • Changed table structure of config, and how it is handled
  • Added a custom error handler
  • Improved MySQL Database class
  • All files are now in *nix format, using tabs - no more tabs to spaces (sorry windows users)
  • Improved template class.
  • Code cleanup (Laziness of using the ternary operator mostly; in cases where an if statement would be easier to read/follow).

0.5.0 promises to be the best yet, you all will love it ;)

Stay tuned.

Wordpress recently updated (and this blog updated to the latest version, 2.1.3)

We have a security update release now available for both the 2.1 and 2.0 branches of WordPress now available for immediate download. This update is highly recommend for all users of both branches.

These releases include fixes for several publicly known minor XSS issues, one major XML-RPC issue, and a proactive full sweep of the WordPress codebase to protect against future problems. Many thanks to Sumit Siddharth and Alex Concha for their help with reporting issues in this release.

As an update to the systems issue we had last month, we have taken dozens of additional precautions with the servers and systems that run WordPress.org and they appear to be working well, despite hundreds of hack attempts after we publicly disclosed there had been a problem. We are also now aggressively monitoring all downloads for any changes or modifications, and we are confident the same type of problem won’t happen again.

Upgrade now!

’tis very sad, I used to watch his show on occassion. Still in shock. :( Thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said today.

It is understood he was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest and reportedly into his heart .

He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary when the tragedy occured.

The Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) was called about 11am (AEST) and an emergency services helicopter was flown to the crew’s boat on Batt Reef, off the coast near Cairns, with a doctor and emergency services paramedic on board.

Irwin had a puncture wound to the left side of his chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Irwin’s body is being flown to Cairns.

One report today said his American-born wife Terri was trekking on Cradle Mountain in Tasmania and was yet to be told of her husband’s death.

The Irwins have two children - a daughter, Bindi Sue Irwin, eight, and a three-year-old son, Robert (Bob) Clarence Irwin.

Today I bring to you a nice little program called DomainInquire, created by my good friends John (-X-) and Rachid (TvDomain).

What is Domain Inquire?

DomainInquire is a stand alone desktop program. It is a ‘domain spinner’, meaning, it generates lists of domain names based on keywords you give to it.

Do you find yourself at a domain registrar struggling to come up with the right combination of keywords for a dececnt domain name?

With DomainInquire, you will be able to produce rich, top keyword names right from your desktop. DomainInquire was programmed with all of the top keywords, nouns, and verbs built-in.

Using DomainInquire is simple:

  • Enter your primary keyword, e.g: Poker.
  • Choose whether you want the domains to start, or end, with that keyword.
  • Choose the TLDs* you want, or the “I don’t need the TLD” option.
  • Click “Spin”

*TLDs included in the software are:
.com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, .us, .co.uk, .eu, .in, .tv, .cc, .jp, .de, .at, and .pk

In v1.0, availabilty checks are not built-in to the software, until V2.0, it is recommended to use Domain Name Analyzer (a free desktop program).

After your list is generated, simply copy and paste your list into a site or program to do availabilty checks on them. E.g. Domain Name Analyzer (Desktop software) or DomainTools.com.

If you choose the “I don’t need the TLD” option, simply copy and paste your list into, again, a software like Domain Name Analyzer, and choose the extensions you want it to check for.

Ok ok, sounds cool.. demo? Price?

You can find a demo of the software in action here

You can take advantage of this introductory offer, and get DomainInquire for just $9.99. That is roughly the cost of one domain name registration.

This price will go up! They are developing DomainInquire.com to sell the software on, and once it is finished, the price will go up.

The price will also go up when V2.0 is released, however, all who purchase V1.0 before then, will get V2.0 absolutely free!

Spyware/Adware?

DomainInquire contains NO spyware/adware. We hate it as much as you do, we will never include it in our software.

Ok, you got me! How do I buy?

If you are a member of NamePros.com, simply private message -X-. If you are not a member you can Buy DomainInquire here.**

** Please note, there seems to be a problem with Gmail users, the email doesn’t get through. So, if possible, please use another email address.

Once payment has been received, you will recieve your copy of DomainInquire to the e-mail you provide.

They accept PayPal

I strongly urge you to buy this software, you will not be disappointed.

I had originally set a date for the opening of PHPSociety for around July/August. However, I ‘got my butt i gear’ sorta speak, and opened it yesterday :) For anyone not familiar with my latest project, I have it on my “My Projects” page, which can be found here.

The site is not quite ‘finished’ by all means. There are plenty more features I plan on incorporating soon; that I’ll keep quiet for now. ;) If you’re into php, and would like a place to not only discuss the language, but find tutorials, scripts, and other misc. resources..then why not join us? :)

Will see you all there.

Various ways to make money with domain names
by David Underhill aka Barefoottech
Copyright 2006 by BareFootTech

As more people and companies than ever are investing in domain names, it has become evident that not all of these names will realise their full income earning potential. As a Domain reseller and investor with a reasonable sized portfolio ,I have often been asked the best way to make money from these investment domains. The following are the most common ways to create an income stream or maximize resale value.

  • Park the name with a parking service
These places pay a percentage of the advertising revenue derived from ads placed on a page displayed when someone visits your domain. Also most of these parking services also offer a sales listing service to enable easy resale marketing of your domain.
  • Make your own park page
Similar to the above ,only you create your own small Website with ads and get 100% of the revenue. This however will not be as profitable because the parking services get a much greater traffic flow.
  • Develop a small, but content rich minisite
These small minisites are usually filled with articles and contextual ads from Adsense. Also often called AdsenseSites
  • Develop a full featured web-site
Selling services or products and also have some ads and paid links. This can be either selling your own products or as an affiliate for an existing online website.

Factors that increase value

At any of the above stages of development and Value adding, you can make money by reselling the Domain/Site for an increased value above the purchase price. The following is some of the variables determining a fair resale price.

  • Keywords & brandability of the name
i.e. Become-rich.biz is Keyword rich and is valued higher than CrappyNames.com
  • Amount of Visitor Traffic
Simple equation More visitors = More Income = Greater Value
  • Return from site
(Income for Ads,Sales or Paid Links) . Higher Income earned ,Higher value for the site
  • Current Demand for similiar names
If a particular type of name is hot property ,all the similar names increase in value because of the demand.
  • Current Search Engine Ranking
If the Name is Not listed by the major search engines or is on page 346 than value is low, conversely if it is listed on the first page of the listings than value will be higher.
  • Number of Sites linking to your site
Related to Traffic and S.E.Ranking , More links = more traffic + higher rankings
  • How keen is the buyer for name
Buyer may want the name for a specific purpose and will pay a premium to ensure they get it.

Ways to Lose money on Domains

  • Register a trademarked name
like “P*yP*lFees.com” because of the Legal hassles. Most High profile companies can afford an expensive legal battle ,can you?
  • Pay too much for Domain Name
Just because ReallyGreat.com sold for $Big-bucks , doesn’t mean paying $bigBucks for any old name will mean reselling it for an even higher price.
  • Get scammed by Email and other types of fraud
Domain investors attract more than their fair share of Scammers A common one is an email claiming to be someone wishing to buy your name ,all you have to do is use their preferred Appraisal service to confirm the offered price. It is just a ruse to get you to pay an inflated price for this appraisal.
