For the past two years, I’ve been fortunate to use JetBrains‘ excellent PHPStorm IDE through their Open Source Program. The free license gave me access to all the powerful development tools I could need, and significantly enhanced my productivity as a developer.
The Unexpected Change
Recently, I was sent an email stating that my license was up for renewal. So, I did as before, went through the process and provided all the information asked for. To my surprise, I found out that their program has apparently changed.
JetBrains updated their Open Source Program requirements, and unfortunately, my projects no longer qualify. The new criteria emphasize larger, more established, and more widely known projects with significant community recognition. While I understand their business need to focus resources on high-impact open source projects, it leaves developers like me—those working on smaller but meaningful projects—now looking for an alternative.
My Development History
PHPStorm is all I’ve known for a few years now. Prior to PHPStorm, I used phpDesigner by MPSoftware. It is a program I knew well, and had used for almost a decade. However, it seems it is no longer actively developed or supported.
I am strictly an open source developer. I have never been a professional developer, so my projects are not geared toward, nor have generated, income. Because of this, and just life in general, I cannot afford nor justify a personal PHPStorm license.
The Search for Alternatives
What I’m curious about—and would love to hear from everyone—is this: Which free alternatives have you found that even come close to matching the productivity and feature richness of premium IDEs like those from JetBrains?
It seems the most popular option would be Visual Studio Code, along with several of their available extensions/plugins. Any PHP developers out there with tips or recommendations on settings, plugins, or overall workspace setup that could help ease someone coming from PHPStorm into VSCode?
I’m particularly interested in:

- How to replicate PHPStorm’s intelligent code completion
- Debugging setup and workflow
- Project management and file navigation
- Integration with frameworks like Laravel or Symfony
- Code refactoring capabilities
- Database management tools
What I’m Looking For
Having been spoiled by PHPStorm’s comprehensive feature set, I’m hoping to find alternatives that can handle:
- Advanced PHP intellisense and autocompletion
- Built-in terminal and Git integration
- Robust debugging with Xdebug
- Code quality tools and linting
- Framework-specific features
- Database connectivity and management
- Efficient large codebase navigation
